Lucian Architectural Lighting partnered with Vesalius to replatform its website onto a modern Astro architecture designed around search performance, crawlability, and a premium user experience. The challenge was unusually high stakes.
Lucian already held strong organic visibility across many of the world-class lighting brands it distributes throughout Australia. A failed migration would have meant lost rankings, lost enquiries, and months of recovery. But preserving rankings was only part of the brief. The existing platform no longer reflected the calibre of the business itself.
The rebuilt platform launched in February 2026. The rankings held, and engagement depth increased by 64%.
Lucian is one of Australia’s leading architectural lighting distributors, representing premium international brands across the architecture, interiors, and specification market. The business had already accumulated substantial organic authority over time, particularly across high-intent supplier and distributor searches tied directly to the brands it represents.
The website ranked well. The problem was the platform underneath it. The previous site was increasingly difficult to extend, harder to maintain, and constrained in the way it handled product discovery, editorial content, and long-term growth. For a business operating at the premium end of the design industry, that disconnect matters.
The challenge was therefore twofold: preserve the rankings and authority the business already depended on, and elevate the platform into something worthy of the brands, projects, and expertise Lucian represents.
In SEO, full-site migrations are among the highest-risk projects possible. When they fail, the consequences are immediate. The objective was not simply to relaunch safely, but to rebuild in a way that improved engagement quality, strengthened discoverability, and prepared the site for the next generation of search systems.
Every ranking-bearing page on the previous website was mapped, audited, and preserved through the migration. URL structures, metadata signals, internal linking systems, content relationships, and crawl pathways were deliberately maintained to preserve authority continuity across the rebuild. This was not a cosmetic redesign layered over existing SEO. The entire platform was rebuilt with search preservation as a core architectural requirement.
The new platform was rebuilt using Astro and Payload CMS, with a strong emphasis on performance, crawlability, and long-term maintainability. The architecture was deliberately designed to minimise unnecessary JavaScript and prioritise clean, static HTML output wherever possible, because modern search systems still rely on accessible, crawlable content structures to understand a site efficiently. Performance was treated as a commercial requirement, not a technical preference. The experience needed to feel as premium as the lighting brands the business represents.
Before any rebuild work began, benchmark measurement systems were established across Google Search Console, GA4, and DataForSEO. Several months of baseline data were collected prior to migration, so that post-launch performance could be evaluated against a defensible benchmark rather than directional assumptions.
The objective was not simply to relaunch safely. It was to hold the rankings the business depended on while building something better.
The rebuilt platform was designed around the way architects, specifiers, designers, and commercial buyers actually explore lighting systems and projects. The new architecture lets users move fluidly between brands, products, projects, categories, and editorial content. The result is a materially more discoverable and engaging experience for the same audience already arriving organically, and that improvement is visible directly in the engagement metrics following relaunch.
A major strategic objective was ensuring Lucian’s reputation was reflected not only in traditional Google rankings, but in the way modern AI retrieval systems understand and reference the business. The rebuilt architecture was designed around structured content relationships, crawlable editorial depth, semantically rich product taxonomies, and strong brand and entity association. The goal was not “AI optimisation.” It was ensuring modern search systems correctly understood the authority the business had already built offline over many years.
The rebuilt platform launched in February 2026, and the rankings that mattered held. Across 15 priority supplier-brand keywords tracked throughout the migration, Lucian retained dominant position-one and position-two visibility averages through relaunch. Several rankings improved post-launch, including new number-one positions for Martinelli Luce supplier and Martinelli Luce distributor.
Organic sessions increased 16% compared with the pre-launch baseline. But the clearest signal was engagement depth. Pages per session increased from 2.2 to 3.6 immediately following relaunch, a 64% increase in browsing depth from the same audience, in the exact month the new platform launched. Organic traffic also became increasingly dominant within the acquisition mix, rising from 62% to 70% of total website traffic.
Lucian retained leading organic visibility across the supplier and distributor searches most commercially important to the business, including Folio Lighting, EWO, IBL, Delta Light, AQ Form, Nocturnal Lighting, Energyline, and Martinelli Luce. For an architectural lighting distributor, these are among the highest-intent searches in the category. Architects, designers, and specifiers searching for exact brands continued finding Lucian in the top organic positions throughout and after migration.
The rebuilt platform is now referenced across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, and Bing. For a specialised B2B distributor operating in a narrow architectural category, that level of AI-search visibility shortly after relaunch is unusual. It validates the structural decisions behind the rebuild: creating a semantically rich, crawlable, editorially useful content architecture rather than relying solely on legacy authority signals.
Lucian successfully navigated one of the highest-risk scenarios in SEO, a full replatform of a ranking-dependent website. The business retained the organic visibility it depended on while gaining a significantly faster, more maintainable, and more commercially capable platform aligned with the premium nature of the brand itself.
The project demonstrates the value of treating migrations not as technical rebuilds, but as search infrastructure projects, where preserving authority is only the starting point.

We lead with the numbers because they do the work. A surgeon found before the hospital, a lighting platform rebuilt without losing a ranking, an event company now cited by the AI engines. Every project below is a client made easier to find for the thing they are already the best at.
